Avocartel is a speculative design project and thesis that addresses social issues related
to the raw material of avocado. The scenario was developed through in-depth research,
envisioning a world where the avocado fruit gains massive virality. This exponential growth
in popularity attracts the attention of criminal organizations.
By 2028, the entire avocado business and its production chain are controlled by criminal
gangs that exploit Mexican manpower through violence. In response, ONU member
countries enact a law requiring avocado retailers to show the social costs associated with
avocado consumption.
Avocartel represents one of the many Mexican cartels profiting from the avocado trade.
To comply with the new law, it introduces Libre in its stores, a scale that measures both the
physical weight of avocados and the crimes linked to their production.
